Hooray for Frolicon!!

So, I managed to finish my bra top just in time for Frolicon. Actually, I was still sewing the last bits on Friday during classes. But it went really well. I wore it Saturday and got lots of compliments and few folks stopped me to take pictures (but I haven't seen them). Of course, I wasn't the main costume for much of the night because Cliff upstaged me. I was Jesus' girlfriend. It was a blast!!

Now I'm getting ready for Sexxxy Halloween!
(This picture is also Cliff). My costume idea right now is to go as Little Red Riding Wolf. It will give me a lot to sew and a lot of makeup/extras, but I think it will be a ton of fun.
The last bit I wanted to mention was this movie about the DIY/Craft movement of our times. It's a documentary with a lot of cool folks I've been watching online and I think it's really going to capture the spirit of 'why we do this'. So enjoy.

So I've finished the dangley bits on my bellydancing/just sparklely bra for Frolicon. The beads for that section don't match the other beads I have, so I'm using them sparingly. Attaching these will be much easier/faster because they don't need as much support. I'm so excited about wearing this out.

Danglies

I've got a convention in a few weeks and I'm very excited. I'm working on an outfit to take. Right now I'm beading the bra. I've had some setbacks with the sewing, but I think the front looks like what I want.

I'm using the mardi gras beads Cliff gave me, so I'm securing them on the thread between each bead. The small ones I've used so far are going to be fine, but I'm pretty sure the larger beads will need more.

I've got a pair of wrap pants to wear with the top and I may make a little belt too. That way I can dance around the con floor and shimmy my beads everywhere.

crochet madness

On Friday, I learned how to crochet. I have spent all my time since then looping away. The above pic was a moment when I put the hook down to engage in some yarn performance art. I was going to cover both hands together with the yarn, but I got dizzy and had to stop. Tom was a good sport about it.

The first thing I made was a dishcloth, just to get in the habit. I gave it to my friend, Mad Joe.

This doohickey came about while I was experimenting with the 3-d techniques that drew me to this craft in the first place. I also made a dog collar with the same yarn.

I stretched a tiny ball of yarn into this little drawstring bag for another friend, Dan. It'd be perfect for dice, but I don't think he's a gamer. I'm sure he'll find something to put in it.

Once I figured out the true usefulness of crochet, I started a modification for my bag.

Two pockets on the inside should help if from just being a bottomless pit, and I'll probably add more in the future.

There will be more crochet tonight, but not by me. I'm taking Christy her work from last week, and we'll see what she makes. Hopefully it won't distract her so much that we get last place in trivia again. We'll see.

Spontaneous crafting (unfortunately not by me)

Last night, while looking for a pen to take to trivia night, I found my crochet needle. I've been planning to learn crochet for a while. There are some folks out there doing very impressive things - Monster Crochet, for example. Anyway, it went into my purse with a ball of yarn. Once I got to trivia, my friend Christy was immediately drawn to this simple tool. She is an experienced crochet-er and spent the whole time looping away. The result was this:

I'm planning to take it back next week for her to work on some more. Today, at work, I've been working on my own technique. I've got the chain down (mostly) but everything else is a mystery.

In other crafts, I'm getting nowhere fast. I still need to cut the pieces for the shirt and do more beading on the choker, although I've really lost my vision with that and have been putting it off. I did work on an old costume that needed to be hemmed, and I'm glad I got that done. Anyway, hopefully I'll have plenty to show next week. Have a good weekend.

random

A good friend of mine gave me this care bear (they are my nostalgia toys) and in a moment of desperation it became a pincushion. Then my ocd side kicked in and this happened:

Works in Progress

So, over the past week I've slowly been working on the various projects I've discussed here. I used pins to form a design on the cuff/choker.

Then I started sewing the beads in place.

After the messy work of ripping seams, I did a rough fitting on my shirt remake. I plan to add a wide black ribbon under the bust to give it definition. I am also going to trim the collar and sleeves in the light peach fabric.

My final work was knitting and finishing a small wallet for my bag. My cards were getting lost in the abyss of the bag.
